That's the end of our tour of 'Modern Girls in Girdles'. What
have we learnt? Q. Do modern girls wear girdles?
A. Seems there are one or two who do. There may be more who do but
they just don't realise it. How many women prefer a certain swimsuit, bike
shorts or hot-pants because they like the effect on their figures? Chances
are these garments are one size too small and are made out of the same fabric as a
girdle. But girdles are themselves surrounded by a strange stigma. Few
people of any age would want to admit to wearing one.
Q. Do modern girls like wearing them?
A. This rather depends on the girdle. Compared to the unyielding nature of
some of today's fashion corsetry, these modern girls found most girdles
are much easier to wear. They seemed relatively unfazed by the prospect of
modelling garments designed to shape their bodies. Seems girls already doing
their own thing fashion-wise are much less affected by the girdle stigma.
Q. Will girdles be used as outerwear and hit the club scene in the
future, like corsets have already?
A. Artists such as
Madonna started the trend back in the late 1980's & early 1990's. Today both
the fetish and goth scenes are showing signs of rediscovering the girdle -
though you still see many more corsets than girdles.
Q. Will the girdle ever really return to mainstream fashion?
A. Who knows! Who cares! If the humble girdle does start reappearing in
high street fashion shops, the girls reckon that its more likely to be sold
as outerwear than underwear. Meantime, girdles as underwear will probably be
marketed as anything other than 'girdles'.
As long as girdles are still made, it seems there will be a small but
loyal bunch of enthusiasts who will buy them - what ever the marketing
people decide to call them. Perhaps we may even see one or two other younger
women discovering imaginative new ways of having fun with them.
